Any successful scholar will make personal sacrifices to enhance his research. But most are never expected to include a suspect marriage to a barefoot hill girl. Musicologist, J. Monroe Farley hopes to prove that the wilds of the Ozark Mountains preserved the language and music of an era gone by. Hill Girl, Meggie Best only hopes for a handsome prince to make her dreams come true. Neither expects to have life suddenly upended by a jar of bad piccalilli and a skunk.
This story set in the Ozarks of 1903 recalls mountain ways and wiles as unique as the music the traveling scholar seeks. Publisher's Weekly awarded a starred review and described the story as "rich and heady as a jug of mountain 'donk' - and just as hard to put down."

Marrying Stone and it's sequel,, Simple Jess, are absolute treasures. Not only are they both keepers, they are books I will encourage others to read. Learning something new is always a pleasure when reading a book. These two books are overflowing with old knowledge and the author should be praised for researching her topic deeply and thoroughly, making the reader feel they are actually there. Jesse Simple's character is so thoughtfully created you can't help but love him. The folks of the Ozarks are fully developed and fascinating. They are cleverly sprinkled through the story just as they were sprinkled over the mountains. I can't wait to read the third book in the series to see what the vividly drawn characters of that small community of Marrying Stone are up to next. I haven't read a book with characters that so captured my attention since I read the Moosepath League series by Van Reid. I'm following Pamela Morsi with great interest.

Loved It!! The people and times are fun to read about, the people were entertaining, the setting was pretty, all in all it was a very good book. Will be reading the rest of the series.
This was a glimpse into a time gone by and a culture unique to the Ozarks in the early 1900's. The author writes in a personal manner, making you care deeply about the characters of the story. I was lost in it, and enjoyed the book so much that I immediately ordered the second book in the series!
I would give six stars if I could for this story. I loved the characters and the realness of their tale about two very different people from different walks of life, found love. I had tears in my eyes at the end ... and will read the next book by this author.
I was a bit disappointed in this book, but that could be because I read "Simple Jess" first. I truly loved "Simple Jess".

Somehow in this book, I didn't feel the closeness between Roe and Meggie, but I certainly found it between Roe and Jesse. Their relationship was the best part of the story!

Why, oh why, did Ms Morse decide to ruin the book,"Simple Jess", by putting what happened to him in the last paragraph of the "Marrying Stone"? I want my daughter to read this book, but I think I will rip out the last page so "Simple Jess" won't be ruined for her. I will still give "Marrying Stone" 4stars, because it is better than a lot of other books. The visuals are wonderful, and the characters interesting, but, again, why did she put in that last paragraph?

However,"Simple Jess" is simply a classic unto itself!
Meggie, with her dreams of life coming from a book of fairy tales, throws her prince away. Roe, spending time on the mountain trying to collect folk songs, getting to know the people, working for room & board, eventually goes back to his home state. I can't wait to get the next book with the story of Meggie's simple-minded brother & Roe's friend, Simple Jesse. It looks to be as heartwarming as Marrying Mountain!
MARRYING STONE is the story of Roe Farley, a Harvard academic who comes to the Ozarks in 1902 to study folk songs. He meets Meggie Best, a dreamer who immediately believes that Roe is her prince come in the flesh. Roe, however, is an honorable man who intends only to complete his research and return to his life in Massachusetts.

This is a beautiful story. This book tells the story of a unique place. I was continually fascinated by the depth and beauty of this story. There is a great appreciation for the simplicity of the people and life in the Ozarks. There is also a great sense of reality. These two characters come to appreciate the difference between the imaginings of love and the reality of living a life together with love.

This book also has a wonderful friendship between Roe and Meggie's brother Jesse.
Read this book, you will be a Pamela Morsi fan! You will be hooked and forever devoted.
If nostalgia, Americana, and rural country hill folks is something you might like reading about, well this is your series to read.

I stumbled onto Morsi by a search. I had at the time been reading study, factual and some heavy material. So I was wanting to find some novel that was turn of century, old-timely,
old-fashioned and was particularly wrote about either Oklahoma or Arkansas. This book is of Arkansas, but she also writes of Oklahoma in another book. So thanks to needing a break in what I had read, I found Pamela Morsi.
